Q. What is mentoring?
A. A mentoring relationship focuses on a young person's untapped potential and the realization of goals, whether they are academic, career-centered, or related to the development of a specific skill. By sharing information and life experiences, a caring adult mentor can help a young person to understand the value of education, achieve familiarity with the world of work, resolve problems, and work to accomplish his or her goals. A mentor can help a young person navigate a variety of educational, social, and professional situations.

Q. This sounds wonderful. Can I make a contribution to your program?
A. Thank you for considering a gift to the New York City Mentoring Program. You can donate online or write a check to The Fund for Public Schools with the New York City Mentoring Program in the memo field. Q. How can I get my company or organization involved in this program?
A. Please visit our Become A Partner page to learn more about joining us as a Partner in Our Mission. You may also download and share our brochure with senior executives or the Human Resources department of your organization. Once organizational interest is achieved, NYCMP staff will be happy to meet with your planning team to discuss the program in greater detail.

Q. If our company signs on as a partner, what are our responsibilities to participate in the program?
A. Institutions must recruit 15-20 employees to serve as mentors and designate an in-house liaison to work with the mentors, the school, and the NYCMP. Your institution is also required to make a donation to The Fund for Public Schools, which will be used as a stipend for the school mentoring coordinator. Minimum donation amounts vary according to UFT union rates, and many organizations choose to give more in consideration of program goals and objectives.

Companies or organizations are encouraged to be flexible in allowing their employees to participate in this program. Each week—or every other week—mentors will meet with their students after school, during or after work.

For Mentors

Q. I want to get involved. Can individuals volunteer for this program?
A. The New York City Mentoring Program is a partnership program that matches groups of volunteers from an organization or company with a specific high school. Only groups of at least 15-20 volunteers, all from the same business or organization, are accepted into the program. (Please view our current list of mentoring partners to see if your company or organization is already involved. If so, you may be eligible to join.)

Individuals or smaller groups may contact NYC Service or The Mentoring Partnership of New York for referrals to other mentoring organizations.

Q. My organization is a NYCMP partner, and I’ve been asked to join. Now what?
A. Welcome to our program! The NYCMP administers an application and screening process to all mentors, including a mandatory three-hour initial training session. The New York City Department of Education policy also requires state and federal fingerprinting of all individuals who work directly with students in our schools. If possible, fingerprints are taken at the training session. In addition, the prospective mentor must provide personal and professional references. The application covers the mentors’ education, work experiences, and interests. Program coordinators use this information to match mentors with their mentees.

Q. How much time should I set aside for my mentee?
A. Once matched, mentors are expected to make a time commitment of meeting four hours per month with their students, either one hour a week or two hours bi-weekly. Mentors are also asked to commit to the program for at least one school year and to participate in a program assessment process. These requirements are important to ensuring the consistency and continuity that make for a successful mentor-mentee relationship.

Q. What kind of activities should we do?
A. The activities that a mentor engages in with a student are determined by the specific nature of the program developed between the mentor's organization and its associated high school. Mentors are encouraged to expose their students to New York City's vast cultural and social resources, in addition to introducing them to the world of work and helping with academic advisement. Group field trips and special events are typically organized by program coordinators to add to the one-on-one sessions between mentors and mentees.

For Schools

Q. How can my school get involved?
A. Schools can contact the mentoring office to see if there are any mentoring partners available who may be interested in partnering with their school. Mentoring partners are limited, however, and it is suggested that schools work to encourage new partner organizations interested in providing support to join the New York City Mentoring Program.

Q. What is expected of a public school involved in the Mentoring Program?
A. The principal of a public high school involved in mentoring selects a school mentoring coordinator to identify student participants. The school coordinator then attains parental permission and monitors the mentor-mentee relationships by meeting with the students in mentee group meetings for at least two hours per month. The coordinator also works with the liaison from the company or organization to pair the mentors and mentees, plan the program kick-off, organize group activities and events throughout the school year, and serve as a support network for all mentor-mentee relationships. The school coordinator must also submit monthly reports and other documentation as requested to the NYCMP and Office of Strategic Partnerships.

For Students

Q. How can a student get involved in this program?
A. To determine if you are eligible to join the NYCMP, please view our list of partnering high schools. If you attend one of the public high schools on our current partnerships list and are currently in 10th or 11th grade, you may be eligible to join. You can find out more about your school’s mentoring program by asking school administrators or your guidance counselor to put you in touch with the school’s mentor coordinator.

If your school is not on our list of current partnerships, you have a couple of options. Contact your school guidance counselor to see if there are any other mentoring programs at your school or contact NYC Service or The Mentoring Partnership of New York for referrals to other mentoring organizations.
