Oliwier’s personal statement:

I am the first generation in my family to attend college. My family originated from Poland and I migrated to the United States when I was 12 years old. I recently graduated from the High School of Economics & Finance and will continue my education at the Zicklin School of Business at CUNY Bernard M. Baruch College this fall.

Going into college, I look forward to expanding my horizons and deepening my knowledge of the corporate world which I already started developing through the Young Professionals Mentoring Program (YPMP) in high school. YPMP has given me countless opportunities to network with professionals as well as to explore different fields in order for me to determine what I want to do in life. Through YPMP I have been supported along every step of the way by my mentors who sacrificed their time in order to make sure that I am prepared for life after graduation. The job shadowing events, interview prep, and help with my resume all helped to get me where I am today.

Being an incoming freshman has me excited for all the new opportunities, and I am looking forward to networking and meeting people who will allow me to continue to grow and develop as a professional, as well as an adult. I’m excited for all the challenges ahead, and I’m ready to start a new chapter in my life as a college student.

Jia’s personal statement:

I graduated from Baruch College Campus High School in June and I will be attending Binghamton University’s School of Management this fall to study business administration with a concentration in finance. I am most looking forward to finally exploring my interest in business through economics and management courses as well as the Entrepreneurship Learning Community (ELC). In the ELC, we will have the opportunity to meet guest speakers and use a limited-access lounge to explore potential start-up ideas.

Beyond exploring my interest in business, I can’t wait to partake in Binghamton China Care Club to fundraise and provide specialized treatment to orphans born with life-threatening defects in China. Another club I am interested in exploring is the history club. Ever since taking AP U.S. history at the high school level, I developed an interest in U.S. history, world history, and politics. Through the history club, I hope to better understand how historical events have shaped the relationships between powerful nations. As a result, I hope to better understand the world economy and international relations to aid me as I delve further into the world of finance.

The Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc., in partnership with the New York City Mentoring Program, has provided more than $260,000 in college scholarships to graduating mentees every year since 1993. Past scholarship winners have attended Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Harvard University, New York University, University of Oxford, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton University, Rhode Island School of Design, and the School of Visual Arts, among other prestigious institutions in New York and beyond.
