Osvaldo’s personal statement:

Many students growing up do not have the resources and help they need in order to be successful in life. Thankfully I was not one of those students, and I was given the opportunity to participate in the New York City Mentoring Program. I was given an awesome mentor at AEA Investors, Sam, who always asked what I needed and was always there for me. Due to Covid-19 there were some days that it was hard for me to see my mentor in person. On the days we would meet in person, we would talk about life and how things were going for each of us. There were days I was stressed out and needed someone to talk with to let everything I was feeling out. I developed the confidence to talk to Sam about my problems, and he always supported me and gave me advice. He provided me with ideas about colleges, and the difference between staying home or moving away to college. He is a person that I knew I could always go to without any hesitation. Sam has been a huge help in my life, and so has the Mentoring Program as well.

The Mentoring Program has had a huge impact on my life. Given the challenging times we are in, any student would be grateful to be in this program.

Quiana’s personal statement:

The New York City mentoring program has had a tremendous impact on my life. Over the past three years, I learned how to communicate effectively, gained professional development opportunities, received college preparedness skills, and met new people. When I first joined the program, I was very shy and I didn’t have great communication skills. My mentor helped me feel comfortable and eventually I was able to become comfortable with speaking to others. When Covid hit it was very different for everyone and the mentoring program had to adjust to these new circumstances. My mentor and I were able to actively participate in the program's offerings by continuing to meet through zoom and doing our best to still do things we would normally do in person. I've learned about resume building, budgeting, effective ways to create presentations, networking skills and more. This is how the mentoring program has had a great impact on my life.

Kiranjit’s personal statement:

The New York City Mentoring Program has provided many opportunities for me. During my sophomore and junior years, I would take the opportunity of the SAT prep that was provided to us. It helped relieve some stress and helped me understand what my strengths and weaknesses were and how I could improve in certain areas. Having someone who assisted me throughout my college process was really helpful because it was nice to have someone who was there for the good/bad news, helping to look over essays, and speaking about financial aid. Overall, I feel like having a mentor during all of this made this whole process seem less stressful. When things got hectic in school, I would have trouble finding some time to just have a conversation, but my mentor still reached out and checked up on me. In this program, I noticed that they provide us with many different ways to succeed and no matter which one we choose, they help guide us along the way.
